A number of factors can combine to create a dust problem for a site. These can include:
- speed of traffic;
- volume and weight of traffic;
- size and type of material in the wearing surface of a road and how well fines are kept in the surface; and
- climatic conditions including number of rainy days, water evaporation rates and wind speed.
Dust generation at a site means fine materials in surfaces are being lost increasing road maintenance, safety is lessened and the potential for accidents increases because of poor vision and poor air quality. Ingestion of dust by vehicles increases vehicle maintenance costs.
A water only spray regime is often used by sites as a dust control solution & to help overcome these issues. However, a
water only spray regime may not be the most efficient or the most cost effective way of dust suppression.
Many chemical dust palliative products are available with many claims made about their effectiveness in dust suppression
or as a dust control solution. In the past, unsuitable products mixed with incorrect application for dust suppression, poor dust management, ineffective dust control solutions and poor road construction have lead to much scepticism about how cost effective these products are.
